Beijing Com&Lan is currently in the planning stages of mapping our systemic approach to sustainability through development of an Environmental Management System (EMS). Our EMS will follow the Environmental Protection Agency’s guidelines, which are as follows:
Plan: Planning, including identifying environmental aspects and establishing goals
Do: Implementing, including training and operational controls
Check: Checking, including monitoring and corrective action
Act: Reviewing, including progress reviews and acting to make needed changes to meet the EMS demanding requirement.
Beijing Com&Lan will deployment of the EMS and supporting initiatives while being compliant with the law and will establish an accurate baseline for energy usage in a 12-month period in order to address seasonal trending. The baseline period will be defined as January 2011 to December 2011.
Energy Consumption
o Electric – Kilowatts consumed
o Gas – Therms consumed
o Water – Gallons consumed
Calculate Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions
o Electric – Calculate CO2 generated from electricity usage
o Travel – Calculate CO2 generated from travel times
o Heating– Calculate CO2 generated from Heating usage
Waste management and Recycling
o Paper waste –Tons of paper usage
o Recycling water –Tons of recycling water usage
Beijing Com&Lan will set one goal in each category. The goal measuring period will be 12 months. Progress will be tracked on a quarterly basis to account for seasonal variances.
Goals will be determined in conjunction with Beijing Com&Lan senior management, and follow the format below:
Energy Consumption
o Reduce consumption of electricity 5% by 2014
Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions
o Reduce scope 1 GHG emissions from electricity usage 5% by 2014.
Waste management and recycling
o Increase pounds of recycled material 5% by 2014.
Many companies report to the Carbon Disclosure Project (www.carbondisclosureproject.com )The CDP is an independent not-for-profit organization holding the largest database of primary corporate climate change information in the world. The Beijing Com&Lan website may also be used to publish a mini-sustainability report annually.
Once the EMS has been established, Beijing Com&Lan will share the contents and our overarching goals for environmental conservation with all employees. We can prepare a training module, similar to what is provided to drivers for a fleet policy. Each Com&Lan employee will be required to review the content followed by a short quiz and acknowledgement that they will support the EMS through actions such as making sure all paper is recycled, trash is minimized, etc.
Beijing Com&Lan will form a team that meets on a quarterly basis. This team will review the progress of reduction initiatives against the EMS goals, discuss any need for redirection, etc. The suggested roster for the team is as follows:

Beijing Com&Lan will publish our EMS statement and brief description of these requirements on our supplier website. Suppliers will be encouraged to establish their own EMS programs within their respective organizations. |
